We’re now in the middle of the winter influenza season. Lockdowns, social distancing, and masks stopped last year’s flu season in its tracks – not a single flu-related death was recorded nationally. However, the virus is well and truly back this year, and the combination of flu and COVID-19 makes this year especially challenging.

A recent COVID-19 infection may weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to catching the flu. And at the healthcare system level, the combination of the two viruses is putting an already strained system under extra pressure.

Getting a flu shot is your single best protection against catching the flu, and it reduces your risk of becoming seriously ill from associated complications. Astute Simplicity Health is offering a flu shot benefit to all members with extras cover until December 31, 2022. If you haven’t already had your flu shot this winter, we would suggest booking an appointment with your GP or local pharmacy.

If you have already paid for your flu shot, please lodge a claim with a receipt that shows the name of the person immunised, the cost, type of influenza vaccine, and the date it was administered. Astute Simplicity Health will cover a 2022 influenza vaccination up to a maximum benefit of $22 for each person covered on an Extras policy.
