Stay hydrated this coming summer

Hot weather can pose serious health risks, particularly for older adults, those with existing medical conditions, infants and young children, outdoor workers, socially isolated individuals, people experiencing homelessness, and pregnant women. During periods of high temperatures, it’s crucial to stay cool and hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Here are Some Tips to Stay Hydrated This Summer

  1. Use a water reminder app: Download an app on your phone to remind you to drink water throughout the day and celebrate your progress when you reach your hydration goals.
  2. Include fresh fruit: Add slices of lime, lemon, berries, pineapple, or orange to your water bottle for a natural flavor boost. When kept in the fridge, the fruit will stay fresh for up to three days.
  3. Brew a jug of iced tea (skip the bottled kind): There are plenty of sugar-free recipes online. Tea counts toward your fluid intake too! For green and black teas, brew in hot water, then cool it on the counter before refrigerating. Fruit teas can be brewed directly in cold water.
  4. Add a splash of sugar free cordial: A small amount of cordial can make water more enjoyable and is a better choice than sugary soft drinks or fruit juices. Opt for diet cordials with lower sugar content.
  5. Make a fruit ‘slushie’: Blend fresh fruit, ice, and water in the morning to enjoy a refreshing and hydrating slushie throughout the day.
  6. Drink a glass of water before meals: Make it a habit to drink a glass of water before each meal or snack.
  7. Snack on water-rich fruits and vegetables: Many fruits and veggies are naturally high in water, such as berries, oranges, grapes, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, and melons. Keep a container of cut-up fruit in the fridge for a quick, hydrating snack.
